| The CTM produces both learner- and teacher-oriented materials
and syllabuses for the learning and teaching of Dutch as a second
language. Since most young learners of Dutch attend classes
together with first language (L1) users of Dutch, the materials
for primary and secondary schools are aimed at developing the language
proficiency of both L1- and L2-learners.
In addition to syllabuses for the teaching of Dutch, the CTM has
also developed syllabuses and prototypical activities with regard
to language across the curriculum. In primary and secondary
education, this has given rise to collections of interactional tasks
for science teaching.
With regard to adult education, the CTM has developed
syllabuses for Dutch as a second language, Dutch on the workfloor,
and for courses in which professional/vocational training and Dutch
language learning are integrated targets. The teaching materials
and tools produced by the Centre are presented in a traditional
way (books, manuals), or by means of modern technology (cd-rom,
video).
Over the past fourteen years the CTM has also developed an extensive
methodological know-how with regard to the development of language
testing of children and adults based upon needs analysis, predictive
validity research and norm-referenced testing.
This know-how has positioned the CTM as a leading institution for
the development of language proficiency tests for Dutch as a Second
Language in Flanders. Together with the University of Amsterdam,
the CTM develops the annual official exams for Dutch as a Foreign
Language.
